Biography

Canadian contemporary artist, Mateo has developed a distinctive practice centered on painting on carpets, a medium he boldly reappropriates to reveal its full plastic and conceptual power. At the crossroads of painting, textile art, and object-making, his work fully aligns with a contemporary approach that questions the traditional boundaries of pictorial support.

By choosing the carpet an everyday domestic element imbued with history, gestures, and memory, Mateo transforms the ordinary into a work of art. Each piece becomes a unique space of expression, where the texture of the textile, pre-existing patterns, and the pictorial gesture engage in a subtle yet intense dialogue. The support is never neutral; it actively contributes to the narrative of the artwork.

Artistic Approach

Mateo’s research is based on a carefully balanced interplay between material, color, and composition. The fibers of the carpet influence the paint, creating visual and tactile effects that give his works an almost sculptural dimension. The artist plays with the codes of decoration, détourning them and confronting them with a resolutely contemporary pictorial language.

Through this approach, Mateo artist explores:

  • the transformation and reappropriation of objects

  • memory embedded in material

  • the relationship between intimate space and the artwork

  • notions of surface, depth, and perception

His work is part of a broader reflection on the place of art within our living spaces and on the ability of artworks to create dialogue between aesthetics, materiality, and meaning.
